On the feasibility of IEEE 802.11 multi-channel multi-hop mesh networks

چکیده
Several scientific works have considered the possibility to build Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) using multi-channel IEEE 802.11 architectures. At the basis of these works is the notion of “non-overlapping” channels, i.e. with a frequency separation equal or greater than 25MHz. It is now a common assumption that multiple independent transmissions over these channels can coexist without mutual interference even in physical proximity. In this work we demonstrate that this assumption does not hold in general. Through an extensive set of experiments we illustrate the presence of cross-channel interference between “non-overlapping” channels at relay nodes due to the “near-far” effect. We analyze in what manner the MAC layer reacts to such an interference and how this problem extends to higher layers, with detrimental effects on the global throughput. The central problem is that cross-channel interference is not handled adequately by the MAC layer, and in some cases single-channel multi-hop settings perform better than multi-channel. Our results highlight a serious mismatch between some routing and channel assignment schemes proposed recently by the research community, assuming full separation between non-overlapping channels, and what is achievable in practice. More generally, Preprint submitted to Elsevier 10 January 2008 as the presence of cross-channel interference can not be neglected at relay nodes, our findings point to a fundamental problem in building Multi-channel Multi-hop WMN based on IEEE 802.11b/g technology.

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Multi-hop wireless networks provide a quick and easy way for networking when we need a temporary network or when cabling is difficult. The 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) plays an important role in the achievable system performance. There have been many studies on analytic modeling of single-hop 802.11 wireless networks but only a few on the analysis of multihop wireless networks. Furthermor...

Multi-hop wireless mesh networks (M-WMNs) [Akyildiz, I. F., 2005] are one of the key features of beyond 3G systems because of their flexibility and low-cost deployment. So far, most of existing studies on multi-hop wireless mesh networks have been accomplished based on the IEEE 802.11 ad hoc mode. The IEEE 802.16 working group (WG) specified the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard [IEEE Std. 802.16-2004,...
متن کاملArchitecting a High-Capacity Last-Mile Wireless Mesh Network
Despite availability of multiple non-overlapping channels in the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz spectrum, most IEEE 802.11-based multi-hop ad hoc networks operate in a single channel. This substantially reduces the bandwidth available to each node due to interference between successive hops on the same path as well as between neighboring paths. Figure 1 depicts the severity of such interference. As a resu...
متن کاملImproving QoS Performance of Multi-radio Multi- channel WMNs by Adopting a Novel Channel Assignment Scheme
The CSMA/CA based random channel access mechanisms in Wireless Mesh Networks(WMNs), IEEE 802.11 DCF and EDCA, are inefficient to eliminate effectively hidden terminal and exposed terminal problems in multi-hop scenarios. In this paper, we propose efficient channel assignment and routing protocols for multi-radio multi-channel (MRMC) wireless mesh networks. These set of protocols are based on La...
